Ayurvedic Oils

Ayurvedic treatments use a substantial amount of hot herbal oil (taila) which can be therapeutic in its own right.  There is a vast range of oils available, however unless specifically requested or they are unsuitable, we use the following oils:

Sesame Seed Oil

Sesame is one of the most popular massage oils in Ayurveda forming the base for many of the herb-infused oils, however it is also used on its own.  It is the preferred choice of oil for many Ayurvedic practitioners, especially in western India.

This warming oil contains antioxidants, minerals and is rich in linoleic acid.  It is a neutral oil that does not irritate the skin and is easily absorbed.

Brahmi Alma Oil

In Ayurveda this oil is recommended to improve our memory and is often used in head massage as it is also very nourishing for the hair and scalp.  This is a safe oil for during pregnancy and for baby massage. It is said to be a tonic for the nervous system therefore helping you to relax and keep calm during difficult circumstances.

Vata Formula Herbal Massage Oil

Used during massage for reducing Vata dosha in the body, this is specially designed to soothe and promote inner balance for those with an excess of Vata in their system.  This oil is made from pure cold-pressed sesame oil which is then infused with the following warming, earthy ingredients:

Asparagus racemosus (Asparagus), Ricinus communis (Castor oil plant), Solanum indicum (Indian nightshade), Solanum xanthocarpum (Yellow-berried nightshade), Anethum graveolens (Dill) and Glycyrrhiza glabra (Liquorice).

Pitta Formula Herbal Massage Oil

This oil is used to restore (or maintain) a healthy balance of the Pitta (fire and water) Dosha in the body. Made from pure cold-pressed sesame oil, this formula also includes the following refreshing and calming ingredients:

Emblica Officinalis (Indian Gooseberry), Asparagus Racemosus (Asparagus), Aloe Vera (Aloe), Malva Sylvestris (Common Mallow), Viola Tricolor (Heartsease), Rubia Cordifolia (Indian Madder) and Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Liquorice).

Kapha Formula Herbal Massage Oil

This is a stimulating and energising oil that is selected in order to balance Kapha Dosha in the body. Made from pure cold-pressed sesame oil, this formula also contains the following natural ingredients:

Emblica officinalis (Indian gooseberry), Hyssopus officinalis (Hyssop), Zingiber officinalis (Ginger root), Piper nigrum (Black pepper), Piper longum (Long pepper), Cedrus deodara (Himalayan cedar), Azadirachata indica (Neem) and Curcuma longa (Turmeric).

Tridoshic Formula Herbal Massage Oil

This Tridoshic formula is a good all purpose massage oil designed to harmonise and stabilise all three Doshas (body types).  Again using sesame seed oil as the base, the following herbal ingredients have been infused to produce this nourishing and detoxifying, yet gentle oil:

Glycyrrhiza glabra (Liquorice), Emblica officinalis (Indian gooseberry), Rubia cordifolia (Indian madder), Zingiber officinalis (Ginger root) Cedrus deodara (Himalayan cedar), Azadirachata indica (Neem), Curcuma longa Turmeric), Asparagus racemosus (Asparagus).
