Ayurvedic Back Massage: Pristhabhyanga

Ayurvedic Back Massage uses various forms of pressure and movements with the hands whilst luxurious hot herbal oil (taila) is applied so you not only benefit from the massage but also the oil therapy.

In Sanskrit the spinal cord is called 'meru danda' (meru is a legendary mountain and danda translates as stick) thus reflecting the importance of the spine in sustaining the body and in particular the nervous system.

This massage works carefully up the spine then the waist and shoulder areas which are often stressed areas in need of attention.  The massage also focuses on marma (energy points) over the whole back, arms and hands with the aim of first reducing excess 'dosha' then nurturing the body.

The Treatment

Once you're lying comfortably the massage will begin with hot oil being applied to the whole back.  As with all Ayurvedic treatments, this massage is specifically tailored to each client and specialist Ayurvedic oils and massage techniques are selected to suit your own, individual constitution in order to gently bring your mind and body back into a healthy balance.
